Nineteen-twenties Spanish and Tudor houses with narrow kitchens, where a full-height column is nearly always boxed into a cabinet run with barely a finger of clearance either side. What that opening does to a machine is most of the service history on these streets.
What ages a built-in here
These kitchens were never drawn around a full-height column, so the column was fitted into an opening cut to its exact width during whichever remodel added the run. Machines here tend to be the generation put in at that point, and they age faster than their serial tag suggests: an opening with no gap either side gives the condenser nowhere to send its heat, the off cycle shortens, and everything downstream of that runs longer than it was built to.
A column dropped into a hole cut to its exact width is gripped on both sides and vented only at the front, and every built-in is designed on the assumption that warm air leaves the top of the grille and keeps going. Where it cannot, the space behind the plinth stays warmer than the room, and the machine ages to that temperature rather than to the one on its display.
What arrives as a complaint is almost always temperature — the fresh-food side climbing on a hot afternoon, or a compressor that no longer stops. What it turns out to be is usually the geometry.
