A quote for one of these cabinets arrives with nothing attached to it. No reading to repeat down the phone, no letter on a panel, nothing to photograph but the machine itself. That changes how a visit works, and it is worth knowing before you decide what the cabinet deserves.
What the controls actually are
The earlier built-ins were run by dials, and the dials are not in the same place twice. On the 511 and 550 both sit on the back wall of the refrigerator near the top, refrigerator right, freezer left. On the 532, 542 and 561 the freezer dial moves down to the panel above the ice drawer. The 501F and 501R have a single control; the 590 puts both inside the refrigerator, on the left. All are numbered one to ten, warmest to coldest, and none can print a word.
Where a fault turns up instead
In behaviour. Defrost here is automatic but says nothing about itself: the refrigerator side thaws during each off cycle, and the freezer runs to a timer that defrosts as it needs to. When either stops, the owner gets ice, or a compartment that has quietly drifted, or a machine that never switches off — never an announcement.
Sub-Zero’s own advice for these cabinets is the shape of the diagnosis: look at the condenser behind the grille, check that the doors close and seal, and allow for a motor running longer on a hot Encino afternoon.
The noises that are in the manual
Gurgling and running water as refrigerant travels the tubing. Crackling or sizzling while the freezer coil thaws. A hum with the compressors turning, and a few seconds of movement at each start and stop. All documented normal operation, which counts on a machine where sound is one of the few signals there is.
What to do with all of it
Photograph the rating plate on the top frame inside the door, note what the cabinet is doing, and hand both over. A machine that cannot report a fault is no harder to fix; the reading just moves from the panel to the meter.
