Identifying the machine

Telling a 500 from a 600, a BI and the current Classic

Four generations of built-in Sub-Zero, what the model number on the rating plate tells you, and which of them can show a numbered code at all.

Everything downstream of this question depends on the answer. What a control board costs, whether a fan motor is still catalogued, whether the cabinet can report a fault in numbers or only in symptoms — all of it follows from the generation, and the generation is written on the rating plate rather than guessable from the outside.

The 500 Series

Mechanical temperature controls, automatic defrost and no display of any kind; the 590 alone adds a master power switch behind the top grille. A cabinet from this family cannot show a code, so a fault presents as run time, frost, or cold in the wrong place. Plenty of them are still working on this route.

The 600 Series, before serial 1810000

Seven base configurations, sold as twenty model numbers because of three door treatments, marked by the letter after the slash. These carry an LCD with two warning words on it: VACUUM CONDENSER for the condenser side, and SERVICE where a compartment thermistor has lost its connection or drifted. Neither has a number behind it — this generation stores no error codes at all.

The 600-3 Series

The later run, marked by the -3 suffix. This is the generation that introduced the numbered error code table, the flashing and steady SERVICE indicator, and a diagnostic mode a technician can read stored codes out of.

BI and the current Classic

The BI and CL cabinets that followed keep an electronic panel with a service indicator, and the current Classic generation adds touch controls, a water filter and air purification indicator, a Sabbath mode and a door alarm. The rating plate prefix is the quickest way to place yours.

Why the distinction earns its keep

A quote for a control board on a 600-3 and one on a 500 are not comparable, because the 500 has no board. Knowing which cabinet you own is the difference between a sensible second opinion and an argument about nothing.

What we usually find

  1. An owner describing their cabinet by its width and its finish

Not enough to identify it. Several generations were built in the same widths with the same three door treatments, and the parts inside them are not interchangeable.

    Quoted after the diagnosis

  2. A model number with a slash and a letter after it, like 632 slash S

A 600 Series. The letter after the slash is only the door treatment: framed, overlay for a custom panel, or stainless. The functional parts are shared across all three.

    Quoted after the diagnosis

  3. A panel with no numbers on it at all, just a dial or two inside the cabinet

An earlier cabinet with mechanical controls, which cannot show a code because it has nothing to show one on. Faults there turn up as behaviour instead.

    Quoted after the diagnosis

Which of these it is gets settled at the visit, before a part is ordered — Sub-Zero Repair Pro Los Angeles, (310) 844-1973.
