Control panel

A panel that looks perfect while nothing gets cold

Call it in Built-In 600-3 Series and the current Classic panel

Read it out to us on (310) 844-1973

Showroom mode keeps the panel and the interior lights alive while cooling is held off, so a cabinet can stand on a sales floor without running. Left on, it looks exactly like a machine that died quietly.

What the control is watching
Nothing at all while it is active. The temperatures shown are the factory presets the panel was set to, not measurements from inside the cabinet.
What makes it register
Somebody switching it on. Sub-Zero lists it among the causes of warm compartments with no warning indicator showing.
Can you keep using it
There is nothing to keep using — the cabinet is not cooling. Nothing is wearing out either, which makes this the one reading worth hoping for.

It is unglamorous to be told that a machine which cooled nothing for a fortnight was never asked to. The panel gives no hint: it lights, takes a set point, shows a sensible pair of temperatures. What it never measures is the air inside; the shelves are the only honest instrument in the room.

Timing gives it away. A failed compressor leaves a history: food that went soft, a week of the freezer sounding wrong. A cabinet in this mode has never worked at all, from the day it arrived or came back from storage, and it stands silent behind the grille while the lights stay on.

What we usually find

  1. A cabinet delivered, installed and never once cold, with a display that lit correctly from the first minute

The mode left on from the showroom floor. No part has failed; the sequence in the service manual switches the cooling back on.

  2. A panel reading its preset pair while the shelves sit at room temperature

The same thing on a machine that was stored or moved. Those figures are the presets the panel shows in this mode, which is why they look normal.

  3. Warm compartments and a technician who enters diagnostic mode and finds Sr waiting there

Confirmation, before anything is taken apart. The 600-3 control announces the mode by name to whoever knows how to ask.

  4. The mode ruled out and the cabinet still warm with a healthy-looking panel

A genuine fault that merely resembled it. The manufacturer's list carries on to the compressor circuit and then the sealed system, where the cost changes.

    Compressor or sealed-system repair $1,510–$3,440

Follow-ups

Can I take a Sub-Zero out of showroom mode myself?
On the built-in generations with a keypad, yes. The service manual gives it as a key sequence: switch the unit off, hold the warmer and colder keys together, then press the unit key again. The current Classic guide does not publish one and sends owners to the manufacturer instead.
