What reaches us about these cabinets is never a code, because there is nothing fitted to show one on. It arrives as a description instead: the machine sounds busier than it did, or the milk on the shelf is colder than the milk in the door. What this generation actually is
Sub-Zero’s own information manual for the family covers 501F and 501R, 511, 532, 542, 550, 561 and 590. Mechanical temperature controls, automatic defrost, one fan behind the grille cooling the machine compartment, and no display of any kind. Nothing here stores a fault, and nothing has to be configured to a model after it is fitted. Everything that can fail is a part you can put a meter across.
The one job the arithmetic rests on
The manual asks for the condenser behind the grille to be cleared every three to six months in normal use, and says plainly that neglecting it can cost temperature in both compartments or damage the machine. That single task is what separates a cheap old cabinet from an expensive one. Two defrost systems, two different faults
The fresh-food side clears itself during each off cycle. The freezer side is on a timer and defrosts as it needs to. Ice at the back of the refrigerator and ice in the freezer are therefore separate problems with separate answers, and a quote that treats them as one has not been looked into properly.
